Cards are the stars

Greetings pop up on TV, The Archers – and in a GCSE business exam!

Keeping greeting cards in focus is very much in the interests of the whole greetings industry – and they’re currently popping up all over the place!

Ohh Deer hit TV screens yesterday, 20 June, on ITV’s breakfast programme when This Morning’s coupon queen Holly Smith featured the publisher’s amazing deal of 50 mystery cards for £15 plus £2.50 postage.

She also gave a plug about the importance of cards with how having a well-stocked card drawer at home facilitates the easy sending of greetings.

“It’s pretty exciting,” Ohh Deer co-founder Mark Callaby told PG Buzz about his publisher’s TV stardom. “They approached us directly as someone spotted the deal we’re running and posted it to a Facebook group.”

Mark and his team are savvy enough to know good publicity when they see it, and they’ve pepped up their info for the offer, which runs through to tomorrow, 22 June, with an “As seen on This Morning” tagline.

Meanwhile industry folk helping their kids climb the GCSE mountain will be tickled to know their work has made it on to the exam syllabus.

Michelle Mills, business development and marketing manager at greeting card printer Windles, was very surprised when her 15-year-old lad Charlie came home last week after his business paper set by OCR, the Oxford Cambridge and RSA exam board, and mentioned it had contained a question about a greeting card manufacturer.

“He hasn’t been the most communicative about his exams,” Michelle laughed, “but was quick to report back on the question about a greeting card manufacturer!”

Charlie himself told his mum: “There was literally a question about Windles in my business exam, why should a greetings card manufacturer locate in an industrial park outside of the town centre,” and one of the options in the multiple choice answers was that it doesn’t need customer frontage and the site wouldn’t disrupt the local community with noise.

And finally, with Sunday having been Father’s Day, BBC Radio 4 made sure it featured in the storyline of The Archers as B&B-owning characters Linda and Robert Snell talked about him opening his cards – there was even a sound effect of the envelope being ripped.

Robert’s line was: “It’s a funny thing Father’s Day really, but I do like it. Great excuse for a bit of pampering – ahh, that’s a very nice card,” although it did appear to be a homemade one!
