Winner of David Hicks’ Really Good design comp to be revealed at Harrogate

The finalists for David Hicks’ Really Good/Soul design competition were announced just after PG Live, where the judging had taken place. The competition was open to all artists and designers to come up with a creative concept that could be translated onto greeting cards and gifts – with the winner receiving £1,000 as well as seeing their designs being brought to life on actual products.

The finalists have been speaking to PG Buzz about what it means to make the shortlist.

“I have always been a fan of the company and the fun, quirky and exciting products it produces. As I would also describe my own design style as ‘fun and quirky’, I hoped that we might have potential to be a good licensing partnership. The competition was also a wonderful opportunity to put my design concepts in front of some of the most influential people in the stationery, greetings and gift industry and I am delighted that they feel these designs have appeal for the UK market!”

“My interest in Really Good compelled me to enter as I’m interested in putting images on home products. I found a good interview with David Hicks that led me to his photos on Hixposure, which also increased my interest in the competition.”

Sanna Kallio whose Girl Power concept also reached the finals

“I’m a newcomer in this country and I need to build contacts and become noticed by clients and businesses. I thought entering the competition was one way to start! This competition gave so much room for my own creative ideas without strict guidelines about target audience, products or style. I was able to do four complete ranges instead of one or two designs and show that I can do different kind of styles. I also realised that Really Good is a very important brand in UK and if I succeed in this competition, it might open doors for me. I had a long career as an art director in media in Finland, but have had a dream that one day I want to make a career as an illustrator and surface pattern designer. I’m on my way now to fulfilling that dream!”

“Make it in Design posted an advert about the competition. I was doing their winter class and thought what a great project! I am trying to make the move to surface pattern design and am at the beginning of my journey. I love Really Good Designs’ attitude as they have a sense of fun, excitement and playfulness much likely own designs which pay homage to the late great comedian Terry Thomas.”
