Indies hop to charity fundraising

Trio of stores get busy with cash for good causes

Indie retailers have been hopping to it, helping various charities, with raffles, calendar sales and a quick 84-mile trek to come up with the funds.

A really, really big Jellycat bunny was the fabulous prize in Highworth Emporium’s Easter raffle, and his shop nickname of Philip has now been officially bestowed by the winner.

“We managed to raise £867 for Alzheimer’s Society, I’m well chuffed with that,” shop co-owner Aga Marsden told PG Buzz. “Our lovely customer Suzy was the winner, and she was very tempted to keep the bunny for herself, but felt Philip needed to belong to a child.

“So, she gave him to her Jellycat-mad niece Millie, who donated an extra £50 to make up the total raised for this great charity – and Suzy reported Philip was a great travelling companion on her way home!”

At family-run Macmillans Of Penwortham, they’ll be doing without staff member Katherine for a week this month as she takes on an 84m (134km) section of the Camino Way pilgrimage, walking from Porto in Portugal to Baiona in Spain over six days.

And to boost the amount being raised for Macmillan Cancer Support, the indie retailer is adding all donations from its in-store charity gift wrapping service over the next few weeks.

Having just handed over her latest £300 charity cheque Sarah Laker, who owns Stationery Supplies in Marple and Wilmslow, added: “I just want to say a big heartfelt thank you to all our customers for their generosity and support of our charity and fundraising efforts. I’m so happy that we can all work together to inject a tiny bit of goodness into the world.”

The cash came from the sale of the retailer’s unique Marple calendars and recycling printer cartridges, and was given to New Horizons Canal Boat, an organisation that provides fully-accessible narrowboat trips.

Sarah said: “This brings our 2023 fundraising total to £1,276 spread across many charities and groups including Dementia Drop-In, The Christie, Poppy Appeal, Brain Tumour Charity, Special Kids In The UK, Marie Curie, East Cheshire Hospice, Friends Of Marple Memorial Park and probably some I’ve missed!

“We also supported the Stockport Family Nurse Partnership with donations of Christmas presents for young mums. And we donate raffle prizes to local schools and events.”
