Medici Goghs for it

Tim Reynolds’ latest colourful window display pays tribute to artist – and Retas props!

They’re really Gogh-ing for it at Medici Gallery with a fabulous summer window display showcasing  greeting cards with connections to Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh.

And it’s a great example of reuse and recycling as retail manager Tim Reynolds took advantage of his day at the recent Retas Awards to take home many of the props from the event to deck out the window at the South Kensington store.

With the Medici Gallery having produced and sold fine art since 1908, its card shop’s latest window is a fitting tribute to one of the most influential figures in the history of Western art, who died at just 37 leaving behind around 2,100 works, including 860 oil paintings, most created in the last two years of his life.

It marks the 50th anniversary of Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum, which was also honoured as the theme at the recent greeting card retailing awards The Retas, where Medici Gallery was a finalist.

“We had some lovely props for The Retas, with N Smith creating the stunning Van Gogh selfie setting from cardboard,” said Jakki Brown, editor of PG magazine and co-owner of Max Publishing which owns and organisers The Retas.

“It would have been such a shame to throw anything away so I was keen to encourage people to take them home. Tim and his assistant manager Charlie Wheatley are known for their detailed and timely window displays and had an idea for a Van Gogh theme so it worked out brilliantly.”

Tim went back to the shop from The Retas in a taxi stuffed with props – luckily the taxi driver was happy to help him out at the other end.

Among the Medici Gallery’s colourful windows this year so far have been Easter, King Charles III’s coronation, Mother’s Day, Valentine’s and Wimbledon.
