Youthful growth on the cards

“Millennials are now the largest segment of greeting card buyers in the US,” says American Greetings’ head honcho

Jeff Weiss, co-ceo of American Greetings, parent company of UK Greetings, jetted into PG Live bringing good news that the Gen Y are really engaging with greeting cards.

“Millennials or Gen Y are the first generation for well over 100 years that are writing more than the previous generation,” Jeff told PG Buzz during his visit to the show. “Our research has confirmed that the youth of today are turning back to writing. They don’t particularly like talking on the phone, but feel comfortable writing about their feelings, which is good news for greeting cards.”

PG Live marked the first unveiling of a host of brand new innovations from UK Greetings, from Star Wars cards with added extras, such as an extendable light saber, sound chip with movement BB8 design and inventive pop-ups.

Also being showcased on the UK Greetings’ stand (240) are new Disney and Marvel ranges, featuring UK Greetings’ created artwork styles.

“We’re always pushing our ideas further and we’re really proud of what we’ve achieved with our Disney, Marvel and Star Wars innovation cards,” says Ben Whittington, senior creative manager for Disney and humour. “Whether we’re working with pop-ups, origami, sound effects, lights or motion chips everything is always designed to maximise the storytelling of these amazing franchises.”

Visitors are being invited to use the props in a Disney ‘dress-up box’ to take fun snaps as well as enter a prize draw to win a magnum of champagne.
