WHSmith Asks Card Suppliers To Strip Off

WHSmith is the latest retailer is ramping up the number of unwrapped cards it is stocking.

Claire Castle, senior buyer for cards for WHSmith’s High Street confirmed that the multiple has “started to take steps to ask our suppliers to remove cellophane wrapping from the cards they supply to us wherever possible.”

Around a quarter of the cards sold in WHSmith’s high street stores have always been sold unwrapped, but Claire explains that the retailer has been in dialogue with suppliers to ask them to take steps to remove packaging from other ranges.

“Father’s Day this year was our first event unwrapped and the majority of publishers are now delivering without cellophane wrapping – unless there are practical reasons such as handmade elements or decoration that would be damaged without some sort of cover,” clarifies Claire.

While she explains as it will take a little while for old wrapped stock to be sold through, wrapped cards will continue to be on display in its high street stores for a while longer. However she hopes that “eventually the vast majority of our cards will be unwrapped”.
