Call to complete GCA’s annual Market Report survey

July 25 deadline for compiling data that reveals condition of £1.4bn greeting card industry

Calling all GCA members – it’s time to complete the annual Market Report survey where the findings will reveal the health and wealth of the UK greeting card sector.

With the project being managed independently by Echo Research to assure its accuracy and total confidentiality, all GCA members were recently emailed a link to the Market Report questionnaire, alternatively they can contact to request a copy, and also ask any questions they may have.

The current 2021 report revealed that even a pandemic couldn’t stop the UK public spending an extraordinary £1.4billion on single greeting cards in 2020 – an amazing total of 708 million individual cards, which doesn’t include Christmas or Easter card boxes or packs.

Based on actual sales data from GCA members, association president Chris Bryan, who is also joint general manager of Second Nature, admitted the total market value on single cards did represent an 8.5% decline in retail value sales, but he added: “This is a solid performance given the 2020 retail landscape.”

He said the British public’s love for cards shone through in what has been largely accepted as the worst year in retail on record, with lockdowns forcing many greetings retailers to close as well as significantly reducing the social gatherings and shared celebrations which drive card sales.

Chris added: “Given the scale and gravity of the challenges faced in 2020, it’s clear that the greeting card market remains incredibly resilient with a strong underlying performance. The UK population continues to be highly engaged with this category and our appetite for buying and sending greeting cards continues.”

To find out how the market has developed with the move on to post-Covid life, and the start of the cost-of-living crisis, the GCA really wants to hear from as many members as possible to get a true handle on how 2021 panned out for those in the industry.

The deadline for completing the survey to be included in the GCA Greeting Card Market Report 2022 is July 25 so either click the link in the association email, or contact to request a copy of the questionnaire, to make sure your company’s views are included.

Once complete, the Market Report will be released in the autumn and made available free of charge to full GCA members through the Members’ area of the association website, while non-members can purchase it for £750.
