All aboard for Festive Friday

UK Greetings gets in spirit with social media, mince pies, and helping local causes

It’s Festive Friday today! And UK Greetings is one company which has really been getting in the spirit, helping schools, a care home and the local lights switch-on event to tie in with the kickstart Christmas card-sending initiative.

Among UKG’s social media campaigns and creative work there was also plenty of time for fun with festive music and mulled wine – non-alcoholic of course! – at the firm’s Dewsbury HQ this week plus a mince pie tasting test.

“It was lots of fun! And the M&S Collection mini mince pies won,” marketing communications director Jill Alexander told PG Buzz. “We had a really festive day on Wednesday, with plenty of seasonal music and mulled wine, which helped us all get in the spirit for our next phase of creative development for Christmas 2023.

“We’ve been posting on our social media platforms for some weeks and will continue to do so, re the postal strikes, encouraging everyone to send their cards early to avoid disappointment so, fingers crossed, it works.”

Festive Friday today, 2 December, is the GCA’s annual event to encourage everyone in Britain to buy and send their festive cards, as receiving them reminds people to send their own so it kicks off the annual exchange of season’s greetings.

With the initiative very much on the UKG radar, the company has been running a pre-awareness campaign on social media and its webshop, as well as having lots of posters around the building encouraging all colleagues to write their Christmas cards – with the publisher once again paying for the postage.

And, led by colleague Amy Weaver, the team has been busy writing personalised Christmas cards for the residents at nearby Ashton Grange care home.

“As a team we wrote 250 cards,” Jill added, “which really helped remind us how important greeting cards are, and why we do what we do – to create happiness, laughter and love!

“A few members of the team will be delivering these to Ashcroft Grange in person on Thursday, 15 December, and they will spend a little bit of time there to meet and interact with the residents too.”

UKG has also donated gift wrap to some local schools, as well as to a Christmas gift toy project in Bedfordshire, and creatives Chloe Henson, Christine Billett, Nicola Blanchfield, Rebecca Hodgson and Selina Catto did the design work for the Dewsbury Lights Switch On which takes place tomorrow, Saturday, 3 December, in the town with a festive market and lantern parade.

And, alongside the postbox for written cards to be mailed, the company also has collection boxes for donations to the RSPCA and Dewsbury Community Outreach Foodbank.

PG Buzz would love to hear from anyone taking part in Festive Friday events. Please do send your stories and pictures to jakkib@max-publishing.co.uk as well as posting them on social media with the hashtags #FestiveFriday and #sendacarddeliverasmile.

The BBC has also run a story to suggest sending Christmas cards early – Royal Mail’s advertised last posting dates are 19 December with second class stamps, and 21 December for first class but, with industrial action already due on  9, 11, 14, 15, 23, 24 December and previous strikes having halted many deliveries, the quicker the cards are in the post, the more likely they are to arrive in time.
